Fresh air, lists & yoga

Sorted Communications’ director, Ali Marsland, gives an insight into life at the top, the way she likes to work, and how she winds down at the end of the day.

The text is accompanied with an image of a woman, stood in front of a green-coloured background, smiling at the camera.I registered the company in 2013 after working in communications, both as part of in-house comms teams and as a freelancer, for many years.

Being the company director is not nearly as glamorous as it might sound! It really means I do anything and everything, from HR and marketing to sales and finance, as well as keeping up to speed with everything the team is working on and making sure I’m supporting them where needed. I’m also back-up for anything that might be needed if someone else is off or we need extra capacity for urgent work.

On a typical day I start with a cup of green tea and a banana, read the news headlines and have a scroll through Facebook. I live in a really pretty conservation area in Nottingham with lots of old houses and trees, and I like to start the day with a quick morning stroll for some fresh air.

Once I’m back home, I check my to-do list (I always end my day by updating it for the next day) and get to work! I like to work in relative silence with no background noise other than the sounds coming in from outside the open window.

As I’m involved in so many aspects of the business, I ‘batch’ my activities into different days. On Mondays and Wednesdays, I usually have several catch-ups and 1-to-1s with the team and calls with new and existing clients. Tuesdays and Thursdays are my ‘thinking’ days, which I try to keep clear of calls so I can get stuck into bigger projects and strategic work. On Fridays I go dragon boating on the nearby river at 7am and then use the rest of the day for admin and catching up – and hopefully finish a bit earlier than 5pm.

Once I’ve logged off for the day, I’m pretty good at switching off and not checking emails, but there’s usually something that I’m trying to figure out or improve. I find running is a great space for thinking – some of my best ideas arrive while I’m running! I like being active and do some form of exercise most evenings once I’ve finished work – usually dragon boating, circuit training, running or yoga.

I’ve worked in communications for more than 20 years and I’ve always loved the variety of the work. In my role at Sorted I have the variety of the communications work combined with wearing many different hats in the company and the flexibility of being able to work from anywhere and control my own hours. I love that every day is different.

I’ve always loved to travel and running a remote business working with a great team of experienced people enables me to do a job I love from some fantastic locations. I’ve worked from South Africa, Bali, Colombia, Thailand, Morocco, Spain, Italy, France and various places in the UK. As long as I’ve got a good Wi-Fi connection, it’s business as usual wherever I am!
