Spending more time doing what I love

After almost 10 years working in NHS communications, Jo Powell decided to take the plunge into freelancing and hasn’t looked back since. Here, Jo talks more about how working with Sorted offers both job satisfaction and a great work-life balance.

Image reads: "A day in the life of... Jo Powell: Writer. The text is accompanied with an image of a woman, wearing a Santa hat. She is accompanied with a small dog, who appears to also be wearing a Santa costume.I’ve been working with Ali since she set up the company in 2013. I first decided to try working freelance because, having worked my way up to a senior position within NHS communications, I found I was spending more time in meetings than doing what I love – writing.

I now happily spend most of my days writing copy for a range of clients, researching topics, editing web pages, and so on. It’s really satisfying to see the final product being used. I also enjoy juggling all the different topics as it means I come to each new piece of work with a fresh frame of mind, and it’s always exciting learning about something new.

In my spare time I enjoy watching cookery programs on TV and making special meals for my family and friends, or simply sitting and reading a good book, usually by my favourite author, John Connolly. My working days usually start early, as I like to get a jump on the day – if I’m busy, it means I get going as early as possible; if it’s a quiet day, I can finish early!

That’s one of the other benefits of working freelance and for Sorted Communications – there are often peaks and troughs. The peaks are when I’m really busy and every day brings a new challenge; the troughs are when there is less work to do that day, allowing me to refresh my thoughts and recharge my batteries – it usually equals a great work-life balance that helps to keep my motivation levels high.

Each day when I turn the computer off, I know that I’ve learned something, created and crafted something, and helped someone communicate something important in the right way.  It’s very satisfying, and I always look forward to the next day’s work (although perhaps just a teensy bit less than I look forward to the weekends).
