Meet Harry, our foraging comms manager

Harry, one of our team of comms managers, gives us the lowdown on a typical working day in the life as a Sorted team member (and part-time TikTok forager).

BamBOO!!!

Now, I’m not saying that’s the funniest joke you’ll hear today, or indeed the most original, but it’s how I started my day. My two young boys still don’t 100% understand jokes. A recent example includes “Dadda I have a joke for you. All the dinosaurs are dead! HA!” So, we have a bit of work to do on that front.

If you’re reading this blog interested in what a day-in-the-life for me looks like, then it sort of starts off like that. It’ll begin with some randomness which may or may not be about Venus fly traps and/or zombies, before they head off for another day of education and I can crack on with my writing.

I’m a communications manager here at Sorted Communications. This means I work to deliver written content as briefed by our clients. I may sometimes join them in their online team meetings or have chats with them to narrow down exactly what they need from me. I’ll write a range of material from tweets to blogs to case studies and press releases. One morning I might be interviewing people to write up their stories, and in the afternoon I could be writing a blog about the dangers of drinking too much coffee (I’ll be the judge of that).

Everything is done from the comfort of my desk at home. No need to commute means I can have an easier morning than most and when I slap open my laptop, I’m ready to go. The first thing I check for is any urgent requests that may have come through since logging off the day before, otherwise I’ll get stuck into any current client jobs.

I’ve worked for Sorted Communications since October 2022 after a few years being a freelance writer. Before that, I worked in marketing and communications roles in Scottish and English universities, and also spent time working for the Science and Technology Facilities Council. It’s been a wonderfully straightforward transition as the basic requirements are the same. I’m given a client brief and a deadline to meet it by.

I tend to work in the mornings and early afternoons, but also work in the evenings after the kids have gone to sleep. My hours of work aren’t set, which comes in really handy during the school holidays. If I need to stop writing in order to deal with an urgent question raised by another brilliant episode of Bluey then I’m all over it.

Working as part of a permanently remote team suits my lifestyle perfectly and, as a result, has helped me deliver great results for our clients. The Sorted team catch up at least weekly, and regularly email or message one another. Everyone has the support of everyone else whenever they need it, and we can each have a perfect work-life balance. If I wanted to, I could hop on a plane to Bali and work there for a month so long as I had a computer and internet connection. The wife and kids may have left me by the time I got back, but that’s not the point.

Away from work, one of my favourite pastimes is foraging for wild food. I love getting outside into the country or onto a beach and seeing what tasty snacks I can find. Summer and autumn tend to give the easiest harvest with plenty of berries and fruits available, and it’s also a great time for mushroom hunting. There are so many flavours out there in the UK which are rarely tasted by people, even though they are on our doorstep. It’s a wonderful hobby and really connects you with the outdoors. I’m lucky to have some secret spots which offer me regular hauls of chanterelles and porcini, two varieties of mushroom which turn any old meal into something ‘right posh’. I’m occasionally on TikTok when the mood strikes me if you want to hear me get excited about stuff like sea buckthorn.
