About us

We’ve been working as an extra pair of hands for busy communications teams since 2013. Between us, we have more than a century’s experience working with communications teams in the NHS, wider healthcare, pharma, charities, and the third and public sectors.

We’re skilled at transforming specialised terminology into plain English. In fact, writing about scientific research, technical advancements, and changes to health and care services – and what it all means for you and your stakeholders – is second nature.

We work completely flexibly and are happy to work with your in-house team or preferred suppliers to get the job done quickly, efficiently and cost-effectively. Contact us to find out how we can work together.

Our team

Sorted Communications is run by Ali Marsland, with support from a small team of people with expertise in writing, design, admin, print, photography and more. Our team includes communications and journalism professionals with scientific education and extensive experience in health and medical writing.

Ali

Director
Ali brings more than two decades of writing and communications experience to Sorted Communications. Having trained in linguistics and held in-house communication roles in the UK National Health Service and John Lewis, Ali set up Sorted Communications (originally known as The Effective English Company) in 2013 to provide flexible, remote communications support to in-house teams. When she is not applying her direct, no-nonsense and can-do approach to the business environment, she loves to take on the world of dragon boat racing, a passion she indulges alongside her love of travel.

Freyja

Proofreader
Freyja has over 14 years' experience in a range of marketing and communications roles, from agency account management to in-house creative services. A self-confessed grammar nerd, her natural eagle eye for detail and fixation with all things spelling related means she quickly becomes the go-to proofreader, editor and general quality controller wherever she goes. When Freyja isn't working, or doesn't have her head in a book, she enjoys walking in the Ashdown Forest and drinking copious amounts of tea (always made in the pot, the "proper" way).

Harry

Communications Manager
Harry is a communications specialist with a background in higher education marketing and science communication. Having worked with stakeholders from all over the world, he understands the need for clarity in writing and finding the most efficient and effective ways to convey a message. He has experience in alumni relations, speechwriting, event management and magazine editing. When not creating dynamic prose for clients, he can often be found playing ‘the floor is lava’ with his two young children. Sometimes he even wins.

Jo E

Jo E has worked in communications for over 20 years and has a love of language, writing and the creative arts. She has experience of the broad spectrum of marketing communications that includes branding, writing, editing, proofreading, design, digital, planning and strategy, events organisation and media management. Jo is now expanding her skill set by combining her work in communications with training as a psychotherapist in her spare time. In her capacity as account manager, Jo makes sure everything runs smoothly. She is also part of our writing and editing team.

Katherine

Writer
Katherine has 16 years' experience in the media industry, having held various roles on local newspapers, including as health reporter and most recently as editor. She loves the challenge of writing across a range of topics and platforms, and creating copy that is engaging and accessible for the reader. As a health reporter, she produced features on a huge range of conditions to help health charities and NHS organisations promote their work. She is also a newspaper columnist, chronicling the challenges of being a busy working mum to two young children. When she's not working, she loves going on family days out and the odd night out with friends to drink cocktails or gin.

She has experience working within the NHS, higher education sector and financial services industry. Having been the internal communications manager for a global company and in charge of internal communications within an acute multi-site NHS trust, Leanne understands the challenges in engaging a dispersed workforce and knows what it takes to get results. A day in our life

Life as a Sorted team member
Working entirely remotely and flexibly gives you a lot of freedom over how to structure your day. Our account manager Jo E, for example, manages to juggle her Sorted duties and psychotherapy training, as well as keep up with Formula 1, and fuel her passion for music by attending live gigs and festivals.

Ali and her team of copywriting talent are one of those rare finds that any organisation would wish to make. I’ve been particularly impressed with their ability to distil corporate jargon and create highly accessible, flowing, client-friendly copy that hits the brief each and every time.
